La Plalmyre Zoo

The Zoo de La Palmyre is home to around 110 different species.

Below we have listed the Don’t Miss’ animals in 6 categories: birds, primates, carnivores, ungulates, marine mammals and reptiles.

Nestled at the heart of an 18-hectares pine forest, the Zoo de La Palmyre is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Charente-Maritime. Every year some 600,000 visitors follow its pathways in order to observe more than 1,600 mammals, birds and reptiles from 110 different species. (il y a un espace en trop entre "species" et le point).

Beyond providing a pleasant and entertaining day out for the general public, the Zoo de La Palmyre plays an important role in the conservation of endangered species, scientific research and environmental education. Every year it registers more than 200 births – a success story explained by the care given to nutrition and to the animals’ well being.

Founded by Claude Caillé in 1966, this unique site has grown into one of best-known zoos in France and as part of the region’s heritage is held in great affection.
